We planted several Chokeberry trees in Brett Park, and they appear to be healthy as spring has arrived. These flower buds are catching the afternoon sun.

This Killdeer was winging its way along the Brett Cove riverbank, but stopped long enough for this photo.

Children's Walk Cancellation

The walk was again cancelled due to inclement weather today. We will reschedule next year, with 2 walks planned for the spring and autumn.

Brett Park Walk

Rambled around Lower Brett Park Thursday evening (6/25). I spotted this Song Sparrow at the river's edge and the Jewelweed was blooming everywhere. The latter was a startling sight given the wildflower literature (with a 10 year old copyright) noting this plant isn't in full bloom until "mid-summer." The beauty belies an ominous sign of global warming.

Indian Pond sightings May 16th

I walked the pond at around 8:30 AM. The sky was overcast, temperature in the upper 50's. These photos show a Green Frog, a mother Mallard and ducklings, a Solitary Sandpiper, a gosling, male/female adult Mallards & Cormorants.

Turtles Have the Day

This was a day of firsts for me: I saw an adult Painted Turtle floating lifeless in the pond - first sighting of a dead turtle; I recorded a record-breaking 19 Painted Turtles either sunning themselves or swimming; and I spotted another turtle species for the first time.

I can only guess that it was a Common Snapping Turtle. Please take a look at the photos and let me know.

The Warblers have returned

The trees around Indian Pond were almost teeming with Warblers this morning. I walked the pond at around 8:00 AM and saw countless Yellow, Palm, and Yellow Rumped Warblers. Take some time to visit the Greenway; you will be amazed at the wildlife just steps away from your home.

Mallards, Hooded Mergansers, Green-winged Teals, Wood Ducks, Downy Woodpeckers, Canada Geese, Herring Gulls, Red-winged Blackbirds, Belted Kingfisher. Temperature range from the upper 50's to upper 60's. Very light breeze.

The pond's and river's shorelines were a riot of life this evening. Five herons, an egret, lots of tadpoles, a medium sized bullfrog on the pond's southwest section and a sinister sounding creature, spitting and hissing, that I could not find, but definitely could hear.

Frogs

I have heard frogs at Indian Pont, but they were hidden. Louis has heard and seen them. This is significant because there ahve been several years without frogs.

There have been news stories about the missing amphibians. If we continue to have years with frogs that I shall take that as a very good sign.

Smart geese

I drove into Andreas Parking lot. It was early so no one else was there.

There were a family of five geese, two adult and three goslings. They headed to the corner where the tennis court and the fence along the river meet. They appeared to be trapped. After a little squeezing, the goslings got under the river fence, but the adults could not fit. I stayed still and slowly the adults came back along the short end of the tennis court (toward me), around the corner, south along the long end and finally a right toward the river. In the meantime, the three goslings and gone south along the river side of the tennis court and met the parents at the corner. I was impressed that they solved the problem and that the goslings contributed by not staying still.

Bird sightings on Indian Pond

On a walk around Indian Pond this beautiful, sunny Monday early afternoon, I sighted approximately 12 pair of Mallards, 1 pair of Wood Ducks, what (to the best of my ability) I think were 2 pair of Hooded Mergansers and a Belted Kingfisher.

Walked around the pond at about 2:00PM Sunday 10/21...a beautiful afternoon. I discovered approximately 6 pair of Mallards and one pair of Wood Ducks preening , a pair of Yellow Rumped Warblers, 4 turtles, tadpoles that are getting larger and maturing and a load of Canada Geese on the river.

Red Fox south of Pomander

During 10/14 long walk,a bout 10 am. We were standing in front of the gates to the swim club and leaf transfer station when Howard saw the fox crossing from right to left just inside the fences. I then saw the fox continue along the river going past the end of Pomander Walk. This is my farthest south sighting. I hope it was heading for Terhune Park.

Reptiles & Amphibians @ Indian Pond

On Wednesday afternoon 10/3 I saw more turtles in one visit than any time this spring/summer: approximately 12. I believe most were Painted Turtles and some of the large ones could have been Eastern Red Bellied. Plus I spotted many tadpoles in a shallow area at the southern end of the pond. Birds spotted included a pair of Downy Woodpeckers and several Yellow Rumped Warblers.

There have been sightings of lots of wildlife throughout the Hackensack River Greenway through Teaneck. In addition to dozens of bird species, we've spotted fox, frogs and turtles. Feel free to share sightings of any of these and more on the blog. A sample "posting" may be: "Spotted a Great Egret on Indian Pond and 4 Great Cormorants on the adjacent section of the river Sunday morning 5/20/07 at 8:00 AM." The more specific you can be, the easier it will be for others to follow your direction.
